Chester Cathedral and monastic buildings were extensively restored during the 19th century amidst some controversy, and a free-standing bell-tower was added in the 20th century. The buildings are a major tourist attraction in Chester, a city of historic, cultural and architectural importance. In addition to holding services for Christian worship, the cathedral is used as a venue for concerts and exhibitions. The Old Dee Bridge is the oldest bridge in Chester, the original wood structure dates from 922. Apparently, King Edward I crossed over on his way to fight the Welsh. He decreed that if a stone bridge was not constructed he would sack the city. Fortunately when he returned in 1280, there was a stone bridge in its place. The canal at Chester is popular with pleasure-boaters and walkers. The three tier staircase lock Northgate Staircase was originally a five lock staircase but was modified to link up to the Ellesmere Port section. A large canal basin is at the bottom of the locks. The city of Chester has been defended with city walls since the Roman fort stood on this site in 79. The walls are now mostly medieval and Victorian. They are the most complete city walls in Britain and a Grade 1 listed building. Chester is a popular shopping centre, with its unique 'Rows' or galleries (basically two levels of shops) which date from medieval times. Chester also features two indoor shopping centres, an indoor market and a department store, Browns of Chester, once known as 'the Harrods of the North', now absorbed by the Debenhams chain.
